The grotto was built in 1776-1778 under the supervision of Hubert Robert, one of the most important French artists of the 18th century. The central sculptural group, depicting Apollo (inspired by Apollo Belwederski and the figure of the king) surrounded by nymphs, is the work of Thomas Regnaudin and François Girardon.
