Rock shelters include 6 open caves, inhabited tens of thousands of years ago by Neanderthals and Cro Magnon people. It is the largest known concentration of residential settlements of the ancestors of today's people. Castel Merle is close to the village of the Knights Templar and within easy reach of the famous Lascaux grotto complex.
