Sarlat-la-Canéda is a picturesque town with a perfectly preserved medieval quarter. It captivates with narrow streets, stone and half-timbered buildings and excellent, atmospheric restaurants.
The city was founded around the Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century. Its remnant is the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral of St-Sacerdos, in which you can also see the influence of reconstructions from later eras. The Enfeus Gardens, located behind the cathedral, and the old church cemetery, are a quiet and secluded place. Right next to them rises the mysterious Tower of the Dead, the purpose of which has still not been discovered by historians.
The historic center of Sarlat-la-Canéda consists of narrow streets, houses from different eras, such as the Renaissance House of Boeti and the Gisson Court. Around the cathedral, there is a food market every Saturday where you can buy local products as well as fruit and vegetables. The former church of St. Mary from the 12th century, which fell into disrepair and at the beginning of the 21st century was transformed into a roofed summer market. You can go to the church tower by elevator and admire the panorama of the town and its surroundings from above.
