Wolves of Gévaudan

Local name: Les loups du Gévaudan

The wild wolf park is located in the picturesque mountainous area of the Gevaudan province. About 130 wolves from Canada, Mongolia, Poland and Siberia live here in semi-free conditions. There are guided tours around the park.

In the middle of the 18th century, Gevaudan was terrorized by packs of wolves who killed domestic animals as well as attacked people. The locals even claimed that a real "beast" lives in the mountains, which is responsible for the deaths of several hundred people. It was then that the organized eradication of predators began. In the middle of the 20th century, there was not a single wolf in the area.

In 1961, the zoologist Gerard Menatory brought two wolf cubs to the vicinity of the town of Saint Leger de Peyer. They became the beginning of a park where you can watch wolves living half-wild today. Tours with qualified guides give you the opportunity to learn about their habits and observe them in a natural environment.
