The Paris Observatory is one of the most important of its kind in the world. In the seventeenth century building modern telescopes and telescopes were placed, allowing, among others, to observe the sun and the processes taking place on it. The observatory operates within the university, conducts both scientific and research as well as educational activities.
The initiator of the establishment of the Observatory was Jan Baptiste Colbert. The construction, which lasted from 1667 to 1671, was managed by Claude Perrault. During its functioning, the building was enlarged several times. Optical equipment was also replaced. The main entrance to the Observatory leads through a column portico crowned with a tympanum, in which a coat of arms is visible.
