The temple was built in the nineteenth century on the site of an older chapel, which housed a worshiped figure of the Mother of God. Traditionally, in 1562, during the religious wars, François de Beaumont, baron des Adrets, threw the statue down the abyss. The sculpture did not suffer any damage, which was considered a miracle and started the pilgrimage movement.
