Noirmoutier Castle
Local name: Château de Noirmoutier
The fortress with a 20-meter keep is a perfectly preserved 12th-century defensive structure, which was built on the site of a much older castle, probably already existing in the 7th century. The building, surrounded by a wall several meters high, was to protect the local population from frequent Viking invasions, and in the later centuries, the Normans.
