Unveiled in 1896, the monument commemorates the incorporation of Nice to France in 1793. At the top there is a sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike, emphasizing the origin of today's city from the Nikaia colony founded by the Greeks in 300 BC. Female figures at the base of the monument are allegorical images of Nice (girl) and France (woman).
