The fort was built at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries according to the design of Sebastian Vauban - French military engineer of King Louis XIV. The stronghold is part of the 'Vaubana Fortifications' inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The fort's task was to protect the state borders.
