The seventeenth-century fortress was founded on the orders of Louis XIV to counteract the rebellions in Marseille. In the nineteenth century, the fort lost its defensive significance and was transformed into a prison. Currently, the building is a tourist attraction and seat of the Acta Vista association, which deals with cultural education and protection of monuments.
