The palm-lined avenue is one of the most important walking and shopping routes in the city. The thoroughfare with wide sidewalks, full of shops, restaurants and service premises is named after Leon Gambetta (1838-1882), who on 4 September 1870 proclaimed the creation of the French Republic in the city hall of Paris.
