Digne-les-Bains is a beautifully situated Provencal spa town and the lavender capital of the world. A lot of historic buildings have been preserved here in the center, and there are numerous hiking trails in the vicinity of the city. There are also lavender plantations that you can visit.
Situated among wooded hills, by a river, the town has its roots in ancient times. The Romans knew the hot springs here, but since the Middle Ages they have been forgotten for many centuries. At that time, Digne-les-Bains developed mainly as a trade and craft center. It was not until the 19th century that the ancient traditions returned. It was then that a health resort was established which used thermal waters with a temperature of 50 degrees. Today the Digne-les-Bains thermal baths are one of the area's greatest attractions. In addition to therapeutic baths, there are treatments with the use of mud, massages and biological regeneration treatments.
Visiting Digne-les-Bains provides many beautiful views. The towers of the cathedral tower over the historic part of the city. Around, there are narrow, cobbled streets with numerous tenement houses from different eras. Other attractions in Digne-les-Bains include museums such as the Gessandi Museum, where you can learn about local history and an art collection, and the Geological Museum. It presents fossil collections found in the Provence area, including the limestone rocks around Digne-les-Bains.
In addition to monuments and hot springs, the city is also known for lavender cultivation. At the beginning of August, one of the largest lavender festival in Provence takes place here, and in the vicinity you can visit many plantations of this plant - the symbol of the region.
