The memorial and the Canadian Center nearby Juno Beach are dedicated to 45,000 Canadians who lost their lives during World War II in Europe, including 5,500 killed in the Battle of Normandy. On the first day of the operation alone (D-Day, June 6, 1944), 359 Canadian soldiers and officers died.
