Concarneau is a port city that has developed around the historic medieval center on the island. Currently, this part of the city is a tourist area, and modern life takes place in the districts on the shore.

Medieval Concarneau was primarily a fishing port and a strategic point on the Breton coast. For this reason, the city was fortified in the 13th century, and its fortifications were modernized in the 17th century by the famous engineer Sebastian Vauban. Inside the walls surrounding the island you can find a charming old town with narrow streets, stone buildings and a small park. It is an area of restaurants and bars. There is also the Fisheries Museum.

The Old Town Island is now in the heart of the large port of Concarneau. It consists of a commercial, fishing and modern marina for yachts and sailing boats. The new part of the city does not have major attractions, but here and there by the shore there are narrow fragments of sandy beaches.
