The abbey was founded in the first half 10th century by Benedictines. On its site was the largest sacred building in Western Europe, until the construction of the Basilica of St. Peter's in Rome. The Romanesque monastery bears the status of a national monument. Currently, the abbey houses a museum and one of the largest and richest libraries in Europe.
