Carnac is a small Breton town, which is known primarily from the Neolithic era stone rows and dolmens. It is the largest cluster of this kind of monuments in Europe.
The time of creation of megalithic monuments in Carnac is dated around 4500 BC. The stone avenues located here also called ranks, dolmens and menhirs are grouped into three positions, Le Menec, Kermario and Kerlescan.
The most famous prehistoric monuments in this area are the stone ranks. In Le Menec, there are over 1000 megaliths in 11 rows at one stand. The highest of them reach a height of 4 m.
Dolmens are structures consisting of two or more stones (supports) covered with another flat. They look like giant tables from afar. The most famous dolmens around Carnac are Dolmen Mané Kerionned, Dolmens de Kériaval, Dolmen Roch Feutet and DolmenBeaumer.
The town is also home to the Megaliths. It is an educational center and museum where you can learn about the history of the creation of stone ranks and dolmens in a modern way. The observation deck on the roof offers a view of the archaeological site.
