Arles, thanks to the numerous ancient monuments preserved, is sometimes called Provencal Rome. The most famous building from this period is the Amphitheater, which in the past could accommodate about 26,000 spectators.
The amphitheater, also called the Arena, was built in the first century BC. In Roman times gladiator fights and chariot races were watched here. Currently, the Amphitheater is used as a stage for concerts, performances and occasional corrida shows.
