Velebit

Local name: Vrh Velebit

Velebit is a mountain range in Croatia with a length of about 150 kilometers, and thus the longest massif of the Dinaric Mountains. There are two national parks in the Velebit area: Paklenica National Park and Northern Welebit National Park. Trekking routes in the Welebit mountains are considered the best routes in Croatia.

From a geological point of view, the Welebit Mountains consist of sedimentary rocks. The highest peak of the range is Vaganski Wierch with a height of 1757 meters above sea level. There are also five other peaks with a height of over 1700 meters.

Many species of animals live in the Velebit mountains, including brown bears. In the village of Kuterowo, near the border of the North Welebit National Park, there is also a bear shelter, where injured or young animals without mothers go.

The forests in the Welebit Mountains, in particular around Velika Plan, are known for the legend of forest fairies that live in these areas. To meet them, you need to be a bit lucky and remain absolutely silent.
