Ruins of the Amphitheater

Local name: Ruins of the Amphitheatre

Ruins of the Amphitheater are partially reconstructed ruins of the former Roman amphitheater. The building, which dates back to the 2nd century AD, could hold over 15,000. viewers. Architects unknown today have developed a dual system of emergency exits, which is currently used in large stadiums. The amphitheater was part of the Salons Roman city fortifications system (Salonae, today's Solin).

Currently preserved ruins are largely the result of a reconstruction carried out in the 1950s. The original Roman amphitheater was demolished to its foundations in the 16th and 17th centuries. It happened during the Venetian rule, who feared that the building could be used as a bridgehead Turkish troops. In the following centuries, the amphitheater was treated as a place of obtaining ready-to-use building material.

In the vicinity of the amphitheater there was a cemetery for gladiators who died in the arena. There are tombstones with names and the name of the fighting style that the warrior practiced during his lifetime.
