The Roman City of Colentum is the remains of the Roman city of Colentum, which existed here long before the current city of Muter. It is believed that the preserved remains of foundations and walls come from a Roman seat, which was invaded and completely destroyed by pirates around the 2nd century. The preserved fragments of Colentum are located at the base of Gradina Hill, on the north side of the Hramina Bay. They are partly flooded by the sea.
Colentum was a typical Roman city in terms of architecture - it had multi-storey buildings, water reservoirs, hot springs and cobbled, relatively narrow streets. One hypothesis says that the flourishing of the city of Colentum took place during the reign of Roman emperors Nero (37-68) and Vespasian (9-79). This supposition is based on coins found here in 1907-1909 with images of both emperors.
The end of Colentum put a pirate attack or, according to another presumption, a violent earthquake that completely ruined the city and led to its partial flooding.
