Kaštilac Fortress

Local name: Kaštilac

Kaštilac is a former fortress of a Benedictine monastery, located directly on the Adriatic Sea in central Dalmatia, which makes it extremely picturesque. It is also one of the seven castles in Kaštela. It was built in the first half of the 16th century to defend against the Turks. The entrances are protected by a high tower and a stone bridge. In the past there was a drawbridge.

King Zvonimir offered this place to the Benedictines in 1078. In the 12th century they erected the church of St. Kosma and Damian in Romanesque style, which is also worth visiting. There is also a yacht marina in the village, and a pebble beach next to it.

Kaštela itself consists of seven villages founded by local nobility and clergy. In the 15th and 16th centuries, many fortified castles erected here, with time converted into magnificent residences. The oldest residence is located in Kaštel Sućurac and was built in 1392.
