The zoo is in the center of the Sea Garden, near the Dolphinarium and the Natural History Museum. It is home to over 300 animals representing about 70 species, including 17 protected species. Here you can see lions, tigers, wolves, deer, camels, llamas and several species of monkeys.
The zoo has a penguin paddock and a lake where mainly water birds live. They include not only geese and ducks, but also pelicans and black swans.
The history of the zoo dates back to the 1950s. It was established with the great involvement of the then mayor of the city, Mikołaj Boyajiev. It was opened in 1961. Its first inhabitants were bears, deer and pelicans, and during the next several years other animals from zoos in Sofia and Berlin were brought to it.
