Museum Dr. Guislain

Local name: Museum Dr. Guislain

Museum Dr. Guislain is an institution presenting the history of psychiatry in Ghent. He bears the name of Jozef Guislain (1797-1860) - the first Belgian psychiatrist who publicly demanded the humane treatment of patients. The museum is located in the building of a former psychiatric hospital, founded by Guislain in 1857. Permanent exhibitions present the history of psychiatry and works made by psychiatric patients and naive artists.

The exhibition dedicated to the history of psychiatry is a review of ways and methods of treating mental illness from ancient times to the present. Documents changes in the perception of madness and madmen. Visitors can learn about both magic items used by shamans to drive out evil spirits, as well as the first achievements of modern psychiatry.

In 2002, the art resources of the Museum of Dr. Guislain has grown with the De Stadshof Collection Foundation loaned for many years - an internationally recognized naive and art brut collection of several thousand works.
