The National Park covers the area of the Limestone Alps and lies at an altitude of 385 to 1963 m above sea level. There are numerous caves, 800 springs and nearly 500 km of streams. The oldest beech in Europe, dating back to the 15th century, grows in the park. Bears, lynxes, numerous bat and bird species and seven reptile species, including the zig-zag viper, live here.
