Benedictine Abbey

Local name: Benediktinerstift Altenburg

The Benedictine monastery was founded in 1144. Attacked and destroyed many times, it owes its present baroque form to the architect Josef Munggenast, who oversaw the modernization of the monastery in the 18th century. The remains of the original medieval building were discovered during excavations and are open to the public.
