John Baptist Monastery

Local name: Manastiri I Shen Prodhromit

The Monastery of John the Baptist is an Orthodox monastery located near the village of Voskopojë in Albania. The object considered a cultural and historical monument of Albania was built in the fourteenth century on the initiative of monks who came to the area from Boboshtica. The main church of the monastery was built in 1632, and in 1659 the church was decorated with frescoes by Theodor Simo Grunde and Andon Shipskioti.

The monastery is the oldest of the preserved monuments around the village of Voskopojë. During the greatest heyday of the town, it was the most powerful center of spiritual worship in the region. The whole complex consists of a church and two other buildings belonging to the monastery. The church is decorated with a specific type of tile that is found in the area.

After the announcement of the "Ideological and Cultural Revolution" in Albania, many valuable monastic monuments were destroyed or lost. These included, above all, valuable books and manuscripts. Although, under the revolution, Albania was proclaimed the world's first atheist state, the monastery of John the Baptist has survived to this day and has been on the list of Albania's religious cultural monuments since 1948.
