The Columbus Monument stands just outside the city of Huelva. It was designed in 1929 by the American sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. It was a gift to Spain from the United States as a symbol of friendship, commemorating great geographical discoveries.
The monument is 37 meters high and shows the figure of a man leaning on the Cross of Tau, a symbol of the Franciscan Order who supported Columbus in talks with the Catholic Kings about a trip across the Atlantic Ocean. The statue faces the West, which is where Columbus went.
On the pedestal, you can see reliefs depicting four continents: Asia, Africa, Europe and America. The interior of the pedestal is empty and its walls bear the names of historical explorers and members of the foundation that contributed to the creation of the monument.
