La Torre de Hércules, or the Tower of Hercules in A Coruña, is a historic lighthouse. It was erected during the reign of the Roman emperor Marcus Ulpius Trajan, at the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. It was recognized as the oldest lighthouse in the world, it is the only object of this type that has survived to this day from the Roman Empire. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The name refers to the local legend according to which the tower was built by Hercules himself.
