Forstbahn Vișeu de Sus
Lokaler Name: Calea ferată forestieră Vișeu de Sus
The historic narrow-gauge railway is the only preserved and still operating forest railway in Romania. Its full route is 46 km long and starts in Vişeu de Sus and ends in Izvorul Boului. The tourist route is half the length - it runs on the section Vişeu de Sus - Paltin and is 21.6 km long. The tourist rolling stock consists of 4 locomotives and 8 carriages.
The train journey takes nearly 2 hours. In Paltin, travelers can spend some time in nature and have a picnic. From the platform you can also see a picturesque panorama of the area. There is a restaurant and a buffet at the station.
The cable car was built in 1932. It was used primarily for the transport of timber felled in the forests of the Vaser valley and transported to sawmills in Vişeu. It was one of the numerous railways of this type operating in the Carpathian Mountains at that time, and most of them were withdrawn from use in the 1980s and 1990s.
