Suceviţa Kloster

Lokaler Name: Mănăstirea Suceviţa

The fortified monastery was founded in the second half of the 16th century. The church belonging to it belongs to the group of unique, painted churches scattered throughout the Romanian city of Bukovina. Along with seven other temples, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The architecture of the monastery is a combination of Gothic and Byzantine styles with Moldavian elements. It is worth paying attention especially to the paintings, which completely cover the external and internal walls. Only the west wall with a large window is completely smooth. The paintings mainly depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments, but one can also see the Tree of Jesse, i.e. an artistic representation of Christ's family tree.

The monastery is surrounded by a wall from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, entered in the register of monuments.
