Lokaler Name: Zidul Cetății

The defensive walls are part of the third belt of the city fortifications built in the 14th century. Fragments of the walls along Coposu and Manejului Street and three defensive towers: Turnul Archebuzierilor, Turnul Olarilorsi Turnul Dulgherilor have been preserved to this day. The wall connecting the towers is not original, it is a modern reconstruction.

On Hueta Square, where the oldest building in the city stands, a 30-meter section of the defensive wall from the first line of fortifications has been preserved. It is dated to the thirteenth century.

Originally, the walls were about 4 km long. They were additionally reinforced with 39 defensive towers and 5 bastions. The city was so strongly fortified after the Tatar invasion, which took place in 1241. Due to the fortifications, Sibiu was called the Red Fortress.
