Basilika der Heiligen Maria
Lokaler Name: Bazilica Șumuleu Ciuc
The Baroque basilica is a Roman Catholic Marian sanctuary under the care of the Franciscan Order. The temple was built 1804-1834. It is 58 m long and its towers are 55 m high, not including the crosses crowning their roofs. The interior of the temple was made by the Brasov painter and sculptor Miklos Papp.
During the tour, it is worth paying attention to the historic cloister, two stained glass windows placed above the main entrance and depicting Jesus and Mary, as well as two original side altars, made at the beginning of the 19th century during the construction of the church. On the facade of the church you can see a statue of the Virgin Mary by Rothenbacher, a goldsmith from Brasov.
Adjacent to the church is a printing house founded by the monk Ioan Căianu in 1675. The first book printed there was a collection of church hymns "Cantionale catholicum".
