Enisala Festung

Lokaler Name: Cetatea Enisala

The medieval castle stood on a limestone bluff overlooking the Black Sea bay. It was built in the 13th or 14th century by the Genoese, based on the remains of an older Byzantine fortress. Only its ruins have survived to modern times, including fragments of defensive walls and remains of buildings.

The fortress was built on an irregular polygon plan. It was surrounded by huge walls, 6-7 m high and 3 m thick. On the north-eastern side, they were additionally reinforced with two rectangular towers.

At the foot of the hill where the ruins of the castle stand, there is an archaeological site with the remains of a Roman camp from the 4th century AD. Two extensive necropolises were also discovered here: a dack, dating from the 4th century BC, and a medieval one, dating from the 15th century.
