Grab des unbekannten Soldaten

Lokaler Name: Mormântul Ostașului Necunoscut

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Bucharest is dedicated to the 225,000 Romanian soldiers who died during World War I in the struggle for the unification and independence of the country. It has the form of a simple crypt covered with a stone, decoratively carved slab. There are 8 small stone poles connected by chains around the slab.

The monument was built in 1923 and the royal family and government officials were present at its inauguration ceremony. In 1958, the communist authorities decided to dismantle and move the monument to make way for the Mausoleum of the Heroes of Socialism, where several party leaders were later buried, including Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Deja. After the fall of the regime, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was moved back to its original location.

In 1991, after the fall of the regime, the Tomb was moved back to Carol Park, closer to its original location.
