Kaunas fortress is the oldest stone castle in Lithuania. It was established in the thirteenth century, and the first mentions of the building date back to 1368. After the Battle of Grunwald, the fortress ceased to fulfill its defensive functions and gained a representative character, where the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas stayed until his death. Among the stories about the castle there are also many legends, and the building is mentioned, among others in "Konrad Walenrod" by Adam Mickiewicz.
