This medieval castle is the most impressive monument on the island of Ischia. It was built by Hiero I of Syracuse in 474 BC. The stronghold stands on a volcanic rocky islet connected to the island of Ischia by a causeway. In 1912 the castle was sold to a private owner and today it is the most visited monument of the island.
