Tintern Abbey

Lokaler Name: Mainistir Thinteirn

The ruins of Tintern Monastery are located in County Wexford on the Hook Peninsula. It is a gothic building from which the nave, presbytery, square tower and some residential buildings have survived to our times.

The monastery was founded in the 13th century by the Earl of Pembroke, William Marshall. Cistercians from the Tintern Monastery in Wales were brought here. The place took its name from him as well. The monks lived in the monastery until the mid-16th century, when during the Reformation and confiscation of church property, the abbey grounds were given to the Colclough family. The ruins remained in their hands until the mid-twentieth century.

Currently, the facility is open to the public. Here you can see a gothic church with a square tower. It is adjacent to the former monastery cloisters and the remains of monks' apartments. There are guided tours around the abbey in high season.
