Ballinskelligs Schloss
Lokaler Name: Ballinskelligs Castle
Ballinskelligs Castle is located on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. It is also called McCarthy Mór Castle, after its builder. Currently, it is only the ruin of a residential tower standing on a hill above the bay.
The castle was built in the 16th century by McCarthy Móra. It served as a place of defense against pirates and a toll station for passing ships. It consisted of a residential tower with defensive posts and a fragment of the defensive wall located from the sea.
Only the lower floors of the tower have survived from the castle to our times. They emerge picturesquely from a small hill above the waters of the bay. They are very easy to get to at low tide. However, at high tide, it happens that they look like they are standing on an island.
