Caesar Tower
Lokaler Name: Tour César
The Caesar Tower in Provins is a 12th-century stronghold, standing on the top of a hill and dominating the entire area. It was built on a square plan, which turns into an octagon about half its height. The keep is surrounded by four soaring towers, and the whole is surrounded by a huge wall.
Over the centuries, Caesar's Tower served as a defensive and observation tower, it also served as a prison. During the visit, you can see, among others former dungeons and cells, as well as numerous audiovisual exhibitions. It is worth paying attention to the two bells placed in the main tower. The larger one comes from 1511 and weighs 3 tons.
As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that, according to local legend, the first tower in this place was erected by Julius Cesar. This is unlikely, however, as no historical records indicate that the Roman commander ever came to Provins.
