Kathedrale von Viborg

Lokaler Name: Viborg Domkirke

The monumental cathedral was built in the mid-19th century. Its design was modeled on the cathedral in Lund, Sweden. The temple was built on the site of an older medieval church, from which the crypt and wall elements have been preserved. They have been integrated into the construction of the new building.

During the visit, it is worth paying attention to the carved sandstone pulpit and the altar built by CC Peters in the style of a medieval gilded altar. The murals on the walls depicting biblical scenes are also noteworthy.

The first cathedral was built here in 1130. Destroyed by a fire, it fell into increasing ruin until at the beginning of the 19th century it was transformed into a silo for storing grain. When the decision was made to renovate the temple, its structure turned out to be too unstable, so it was demolished and a new cathedral was built in its place.
