The national park is situated on the shores of the North Sea. It stretches along the coast from Hanstholm to Agger Tange. It includes the area of dunes, moors, peat bogs, meadows and coniferous forests. There are numerous small ponds and lakes here. The park was established in 2007 and was the first Danish national park outside Greenland.
A special bird protection area has been designated in the park, there are also zones included in the European Natura 2000 network. There are many water and wading birds, including the rare black-tailed godwit. You can also meet carpenter ants, rather unusual in other parts of the country.
It is worth mentioning that since 2009, an annual marathon has been organized in the park. It takes place on the first Saturday in September.
