Nikolaj Kunsthal

Lokaler Name: Nikolaj Kunsthal

The contemporary art center is housed in a former church and an adjoining medieval tower with a fanciful neo-baroque spire. The tower is 90 m high, and on its top there is one of the most popular viewpoints in the city.

The history of the church dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. It was built as the third consecutive church in Copenhagen. In 1795, during a fire that destroyed part of the city, most of the buildings were destroyed. A few years later, a decision was made to demolish the main building and keep only the tower. In 1909, the spire of the tower was reconstructed and the entire temple was reconstructed. First, a naval museum and library were opened in the rebuilt building, and in the 1950s it was transformed into an exhibition center for contemporary art.
