Die Caritas gut

Lokaler Name: Caritasbrønden af Statius Otto

The fountain was built in 1608, making it the oldest fountain in the city. It was built by order of King Christian IV as one of the city's wells. It is now located on the promenade of Strøget and is considered one of the best-preserved and most representative Renaissance monuments in Copenhagen.

The fountain consists of two bowls. In the larger one, made of stone, there is a pillar on which a smaller, copper vessel is placed. It is topped with a group of sculptures. They were originally made of wood, but were replaced with bronze figures.

As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that, according to the tradition dating back to the 18th century, on the birthday of the Danish monarch, copper balls covered with 24-carat gold are inserted into the fountain. They symbolize royal apples, which are royal insignia.
