Zisterne

Lokaler Name: Cisternerne

The historic tank complex is located in the center of Søndermarken Park. It used to be a water reservoir. There are two entrances in the shape of glass pyramids leading to its interior. Today, the cisterns serve as an exhibition space for avant-garde contemporary art.

In the first half of the 19th century, Copenhagen developed intensively. In 1983, as a result of contaminated city wells, a cholera epidemic broke out in the capital, killing over 4,700 people. The construction of cisterns was to improve the quality of drinking water in the city.

Initially, the reservoir was open, but in 1889, fearing contamination, it was covered with a concrete structure, which was masked with a lawn and a fountain. The cisterns operated until the beginning of the 1930s. In 1981 they were emptied of water, and in 1996 they were used for the first time as an exhibition space.
