Дельта Дуная

The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe. Its area is 3,446 km², and the area is enlarged by another 40 km each year due to the deposition of sediments. There are many towns in the delta, with a total of 15,000 inhabitants. It is worth mentioning that many settlements can only be reached by water.

Over 1,200 plant species grow in the delta area. About 85 species of fish live in the waters of rivers and numerous lakes. There are also over 300 species of birds. There are breeding grounds for numerous migrating birds from various parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. The entire delta has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and biosphere reserves.

According to Herodotus, 2,500 years ago, the Danube was divided into 7 arms in the delta area. Currently, it has only 3 arms and numerous smaller water channels. The whole area is covered with swamps, wet forests and reed fields.
