Cork City Gaol (Museum)

Локальное имя: Priosún Chathair Chorcaí

Cork City Gaol is a former prison, now operating as a museum. In cells, reflecting the conditions prevailing here in the nineteenth century, wax figures of prisoners were placed here. Some of the inmates' old entries can be read on the walls. Additionally, you can watch an audiovisual show that allows you to better understand the history and realities of the life of Cork residents in the 19th century. More interesting exhibits include a replica of a Victorian weighing chair that was used to weigh prisoners.

When Cork City Gaol opened in the 1820s, it was a prison for both women and men whose crimes were committed within the city limits. The building is an example of Georgian-Gothic architecture, and from the outside it looks more like a castle than a prison. The building's classic proportions include Gothic elements such as wall towers, dripstones, etc. The basic shape of the main building resembles a capital "H", with the Warden's House as its focal point.
