Autun is a historic town on the site of a Roman settlement, many of which have been preserved. Its decoration is the Romanesque cathedral of St. Lazarus.
During the Roman period, Autun was a large center of commerce that grew rapidly. Today, its remains can be seen in the archaeological park. Two city gates have survived to our times, a theater which, in the times of the city's greatest development, could accommodate up to 20,000. spectators, the remains of the baths and the ruins of the Temple of Janus.
The early Middle Ages and the migrations of peoples brought the destruction of the Roman city, but the modern Autun was built on its ruins. Its heyday lasted until the fifteenth century, when it lost its importance to other centers of Burgundy. The most important historical tract from this time is the Cathedral of St. Lazarus church built in the Romanesque style, but with later gothic elements added during the reconstruction. Around the cathedral, there is a quarter with historic buildings from various eras, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Remains of medieval defensive walls have also been preserved.
