Linköping is a historic city and an important academic center. There is a well-preserved old town with a Gothic cathedral and a district of old wooden houses.
The beginnings of the town date back to the 12th century, when a trading settlement was established here. Thanks to the rapid development, the construction of the local cathedral began in the next century. Today, a Gothic building stands in its place, marked by numerous reconstructions. Inside, you can see the chapel of Bishop Nicolaus Hermann, stone tombstones and a baroque pulpit with the tree of life.
Next to the cathedral, there is the building of the former bishop's palace, which now houses a museum. In the old town there is also the church of St. Wawrzyńca Street and many historic tenement houses and public buildings.
Linköping's attraction is the open-air museum creating a small, historic district near the center. Nineteenth-century farmsteads, townhouses, workshops and shops are gathered here. The whole thing takes the form of a living museum and looks like an ordinary urban district. Also among the ordinary buildings of the city, you can still see wooden, often painted red houses.
