Borgholm is a popular resort on Öland known for the ruins of the mighty royal castle that guarded the Kalmar Strait in the past.

The beginnings of the village are related to the construction of a watchtower on the Kalmar Strait. From the 12th century, it controlled the movement of ships in this region and was one of the largest castles in Sweden. The building was rebuilt several times, the last time at the end of the 16th century. The castle fell into disrepair as a result of numerous attacks and invasions, and the destruction was completed by a fire at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, the imposing ruins are open to tourists, and numerous outdoor and historical events take place within the walls.

Apart from the castle in Borgholm, no significant monuments have survived. The city has been ravaged by foreign invasions and fires many times in the past. Today, a large part of the buildings are guesthouses and summer apartments for rent. There is also no shortage of traditional red wooden summer houses, especially on the outskirts.

In summer, Borgholm has a lively nightlife and there are numerous bars and clubs. There are also concerts and festivals that attract crowds of tourists. Borgholm's beaches are among the greatest attractions of the entire coast of Öland and are famous not only for good conditions for relaxation, but also good weather and a large number of sunny days.
