Catedral luterana

Nombre local: Biserica Evanghelică

The Gothic cathedral belongs to the Lutheran, German-speaking Augustinian Church. It was built on the site of a twelfth-century church, and its construction lasted from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Attention is drawn to its massive tower, almost 74 m high and towering over the entire city.

Inside the temple, there are fragments of wall paintings from the end of the 15th century. It is also worth paying attention to the late-Gothic bronze baptismal font, decorated with reliefs and inscriptions. It was probably made of melted down cannons taken from the Turkish army. The organ in the church comes from 1671. It is considered the largest organ in South-Eastern Europe. Currently, organ music concerts are held regularly in the cathedral in summer.

Until the end of the 18th century, the church crypt served as a burial place for local mayors, counts and other Sibylian notables. The last person buried there was Baron Samuel von Brukenthal.
